Sprain or Strain
Dealing With a Sprain or Strain Injury?
You’re not alone, and the good news is, you’re in the right place for help. These injuries are common, but when not treated correctly, they can lead to chronic pain, limited mobility, and long-term instability.
At Olympia Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, we help patients recover from sprains, strains, and soft tissue injuries by addressing the root cause—not just masking the symptoms.
How Your Body Stays Balanced
Your body’s ability to move, stabilize, and stay upright depends on three key systems working together: muscles, ligaments, and your nervous system.
- Muscles generate movement—from walking and lifting to digestion and circulation.
- Ligaments provide stability by holding bones and joints in proper alignment.
- The nervous system coordinates it all, sending signals that control strength, motion, and reflexes.
If any one of these systems becomes disrupted – whether through injury, overuse, or poor posture – the whole structure can break down.
Muscle vs. Ligament: What’s the Difference?
Muscles are the power behind your movement. They’re designed to stretch, contract, heal, and grow stronger with use. But if they’re pushed too far – too fast – they can tear, leading to muscle strains.
Ligaments, on the other hand, are built for support. They connect bones and stabilize joints. While ligaments can stretch a bit, too much force causes sprains, especially in highly mobile joints like the ankle, knee, spine, or wrist.
Understanding Sprains and Strains
These terms are often used together, but they’re not the same:
Strain
A strain refers to damage to a muscle or tendon. It often results from overstretching or overloading a muscle before it’s ready; think lifting too much weight too soon or performing an unfamiliar movement. Symptoms typically include:
- Muscle pain during movement
- Swelling
- Cramping or spasms
- Tenderness in the muscle belly or tendon
Sprain
A sprain is an injury to a ligament caused by excessive stretching or tearing, often due to joint instability or improper movement. This typically happens when a joint is pushed beyond its normal range of motion. Common symptoms include:
- Sharp pain over a joint
- Swelling and bruising
- Joint instability or stiffness
- Reduced range of motion
What to Do If You Suspect a Sprain or Strain
The first and most important step is getting a proper diagnosis. At Olympia Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, our team will perform a comprehensive physical exam, review your health history, and take x-rays if necessary. We’ll determine the type and severity of the injury and build a personalized care plan that promotes real healing.
Unlike many clinics, we also evaluate the nervous system’s role in your injury, ensuring your brain and spine are communicating properly with the muscles and joints involved. This is essential not only for full recovery, but for preventing the injury from happening again.
Get Back to Moving Better—Safely
Sprains and strains may be common, but that doesn’t mean they’re minor. With the right care, you can recover faster, reduce pain, and regain strength, without relying on long-term medication or unnecessary surgery.
