Surprising Benefits of Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy

Chiropractic St. Charles IL Physical Therapy

Many people undergo physical therapy around the world each year. Reasons for engaging in some type of physical therapy vary from person to person. Some may require assistance in regaining a full range of motion after an injury while others may find that visits to the physical therapist delay the worsening of symptoms of degenerative disease.

Children born with illnesses or conditions which limit their ability to move freely are often enrolled in physical therapy as well. Still others have found that frequent trips to the physical therapist helps to manage long-term pain and often helps to decrease the use of prescription pain medications.

Study Verifying Benefits of Added Chiropractic Care

In 2007, the American Pain Society and The American College of Physicians offered several recommendations for low-back pain that was not improving for those who had tried self-care. On this list of treatments was spinal manipulation (chiropractic care). Since that time, there have been over 25 clinical trials that have reviewed the effectiveness of such treatment on ongoing pain in the low back. These studies proved conclusive for the fact that spinal manipulation does, indeed, help with low back pain.

One year-long study followed over 191 individuals who were suffering from ongoing back pain. The groups were divided with some receiving chiropractic care anywhere from 2-4 times a week for a full month. The rest of the group was assigned to undergo physical therapy in the same amount and for the same duration.

By following these patients for a year post-treatment, the study found that 16% fewer patients who had received chiropractic care requested after care, once the treatment phase of the study had concluded. Patients who had undergone physical therapy averaged 6 visits to a healthcare professional after the initial treatment while those undergoing chiropractic care averaged only 2.2 visits.

Physical Therapy Plus Chiropractic is a Powerful Combination

With each type of therapy having unique benefits for the patient, it is becoming more common for healthcare professionals to advise that patients suffering from ongoing back pain employ some, if not all of the following therapies:

  • Application of heat
  • Physical therapy
  • Exercise
  • Pain-relieving medications
  • Massage
  • Chiropractic care

It is important for healthcare providers to explain the benefits of both chiropractic care and physical therapy to their patients as “complementary health therapies”. Such multi-faceted therapy recommendations have been proven to speed up the recovery process and may even help keep patients from developing more injuries or problems in the future.
